EPDM Roofing
EPDM (or rubber) roofing is ideal for use on flat or low-sloping roofs. It can last as long as 50 years and can be fitted directly on top of your aging flat roof!
So not only can it outlast most other flat roofing solutions, it’s quick and easy to fit, which means it won’t cost as much as you might think.
It offers a number of advantages over traditional felt roofing:
EPDM roofing does not suffer with age from cracking or crazing compared to traditional felt roofs.
EPDM roofing “breathes” allowing vapours to escape, thus preventing blisters, a common problem with felt roofs.
It is also one of the most environmentally friendly choices when it comes to choosing your roofing type.
Installation
EPDM roofing is very lightweight, making it easy to work with and the roof deck doesn’t need any kind of reinforcement.
The best way to install this material is to strip everything right off the roof, apply an adhesive then roll out the roofing, however, fasteners can also be used to anchor it in difficult to reach areas.
It can also be ballasted with stone, which can help improve its appearance.
EPDM Membranes can be supplied in rolls as wide as 50 feet, allowing you select pieces that minimise the number of seams, and hence the possibility of leaks, but these wide rolls can be difficult to handle during the installation.
Maintenance
EPDM roofing is fairly durable, it doesn’t scratch or scuff easily, but should the membrane become damaged it can be repaired quite easily using liquid roofing membranes, latex tape or adhesives.
Indeed some types of rubber shingles can also be installed over the EPDM roofing to repair and patch leaks that may develop over time.
