We have recently been working with the Bernicia Housing group to undertake roof refurbishment works at Northumbria Lodge in Cowgate, one of the tallest buildings in Newcastle at 38 metres high.

Group Tegula were awarded the roofing package for the project, with our scope including:

  • Refurbishment / Replacement of the current roofing with Alumasc Caltech’s liquid roofing system.
  • Installation of a new handrail to replace an existing, uncertified, handrail that did not meet current regulations (it was not the required height in places).
  • Removal of existing antenna/masts, along with redundant electrical cabling and junction boxes.

The safety element on this project has been vital, from the installation of new edge protection, to ensure the works, and any future maintenance work, could be carried out safely and effectively, right down to the use of chin straps for helmets and tool tethers/lanyards for tools and equipment to ensure nothing could fall onto the roof or worse still down to ground level.

Indeed, when working at such heights, we need to ensure it’s safe to send our guys up onto the roof, and as such, the site supervisor would use an anemometer to record the wind speed every morning and afternoon, and if the wind reached unsafe levels, works would be suspended.
